About Pickleball

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It's played on a court that's about the size of a badminton court (20 feet by 44 feet) with a net that's slightly lower than a tennis net, standing at 36 inches at the ends and 34 inches in the middle.

The game is played with a perforated plastic ball, similar to a wiffle ball, and solid paddles that are larger than ping-pong paddles but smaller than tennis racquets. These paddles were traditionally made of wood but are now commonly made from lightweight composite materials.

Players can compete in singles or doubles, with doubles being the more popular format. The game starts with an underhand serve that must be made diagonally cross-court and land in the opposite service box. One of pickleball's unique features is the "kitchen" or non-volley zone - a 7-foot area on both sides of the net where players cannot hit the ball in the air (volley). This rule prevents players from dominating at the net and adds a strategic element to the game.

Scoring in pickleball is distinctive too. Games are typically played to 11 points (winning by 2), and only the serving team can score points. In doubles, both players on a team get to serve before the serve switches to the opposing team, except for the very first serve of the game.

The sport was Invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, as a backyard game for children, pickleball has rapidly grown in popularity, especially in the U.S. It is easy to learn yet challenging to master, accessible to all ages, and offers both recreational fun and competitive play. By 2024, it was the fastest-growing sport in the United States, with nearly 20 million participants. The sport has professional leagues in the U.S., Australia, and Asia and is known for being low-impact and social, suitable for a wide range of players.

In summary, pickleball combines fun, social interaction, and physical activity on a small court using paddles and a lightweight, perforated ball, making it an engaging sport for all skill levels and ages.
