【The Science of the Handle】: Choosing the Right Grip Size | HK Play Pickleball Pulse

 Pickleball paddle grip

When shopping for a pickleball paddle, we often focus on the face, weight, and core, but it's easy to overlook an equally important detail: the grip size. An improper grip size can not only affect your control but also increase your risk of injury. So, how do you find the perfect size for you?

Why is Grip Size Important?

  • Control and Feel: The right size allows you to hold the paddle comfortably and securely, leading to more precise control and better wrist action.
  • Power Generation: A grip that's too large or too small will cause you to squeeze the handle too tightly, tensing your forearm muscles and hindering a smooth transfer of power.
  • Injury Prevention: Using the wrong grip size over time is a common contributor to conditions like tennis elbow and wrist pain.

How to Measure Your Grip Size

There are two simple methods to help you find your approximate size:

1. The Finger Test:

This is the most common and easiest method. Hold the paddle with your normal grip. Then, take the index finger of your other hand and slide it in the space between your fingertips and your palm.

  • Just Right: If your index finger fits snugly in this gap, touching both your palm and fingers, the size is likely correct for you.
  • Too Small: If there is extra space, the grip is too small.
  • Too Large: If you can't fit your index finger in the gap, the grip is too large.

2. The Ruler Test:

Open your playing hand with your fingers together. Using a ruler, measure the distance from the middle crease of your palm to the tip of your ring finger. This length, in inches, is your theoretical grip size. Pickleball grips typically range from 4 to 4.5 inches.

Too Small vs. Too Large: What to Do?

If you find yourself between two sizes, the general advice is to choose the smaller one. This is because you can easily increase the thickness of a grip by adding one or more overgrips, but it's very difficult to make a large grip smaller.

A smaller grip can also allow for more wrist action, which helps in generating spin. A larger grip, on the other hand, provides more stability and can help reduce strain on the arm.

Taking the time to find your correct grip size is an investment that will pay off with a more comfortable and effective experience on the court!
